COLUMBIA, Mo. Missouri swept Youngstown State by identical 11-0 scores Sunday to conclude their weekend series.
The Penguins (0-6) were held to seven hits in the opener and just one in the nightcap.
Missouri (9-5), meanwhile, pounded out 18 hits and took advantage of a combined 19 walks in the two games by YSU pitchers.
In the first game, Sean Lucas doubled and six other players had singles. Adam Kalafos (0-2) took the loss but allowed only three earned runs in five innings.
John Koenlein's single leading off the fourth inning was the Penguins' only hit in the second game, which was called after seven innings. Kyle Gibson (1-2) and three relievers combined on the one-hitter.
John McKee and Kyle Mach homered for the Tigers.
Lucas Engle (0-2) took the loss.
Youngstown State plays at Southern Illinois Saturday and Sunday.
Lee, Meder win
half-marathons
YOUNGSTOWN Kam Lee of Middleburg Heights finished in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 45 seconds, to win the half-marathon of the Mill Creek Distance Classic Sunday.
The races started and finished at the Wick Recreation area.
Lee was followed across the finish line by Stephen Godale of Aurora (1:21:38) and Steve Benesh of Parma (1:23:09).
Traci Meder of Stow won the women's race in 1:36.45, ahead of Sarah Flament of Poland (1:39:35) and Kate Andrews of Orchard Park, N.Y. (1:40.35).
Dave Mealy of New Middletown won the 5K in 17:35. Twins Ryan (19:10) and Seth Westfall (19:26) of Boardman finished second and third, respectively.
Michelle Bistrica of Boardman won the women's 5K (22:40), followed by Heather Leskanic of Grove City (23:22) and Erin Stone of Cleveland (23:55).
Over 500 runners competed in the two races. The event was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Bob DiGiulio, who was a professor at Youngstown State. Matt Folk, the assistant cross country coach at YSU, accepted the award in Dr. DiGiulio's honor.
The event was conducted by the Youngstown Road Runners Club.
Boardman's Agnew
third in indoor meet
KENT Sophomore Lauren Agnew placed third in the 800-meter run (2:25.03) and anchored the 4x800-meter relay team to second place (10:13), to highlight Boardman High performances in the Kent State High School Indoor track and Field Meet Saturday.
Other members of the 4x800-meter relay team were Lea Byers, Katie Stoll and Tricia Haff.
In addition, Breanne Romeo placed fourth in 200-meter dash 26.52.
Ohio Red Bulls
ready for third year
YOUNGSTOWN The Ohio Red Bulls semi-professional football team, in its third year of existence, will play in the North American Football League.
The NAFL maintains over 144 teams in 24 divisions. Each team will play a 10-game schedule starting in June.
The Ohio Red Bulls' franchise is owned and operated by coach Will Smith and wife Renee Smith. The team plays its home games at John Knapick Field in Campbell.
A team meeting and players' registration will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Boardman. Each player must pay a $5 application fee to register for the team.
Training camp will begin March 13 and will be held three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) for two weeks.
Assisting Smith on the coaching staff will be Sam Papa, who also serves as general manager; Gerald Dendy, Randy Nuby, Lou Green, James "J.C." Penney, Kenny Little, Jerry London and Cart Bolden.
Mooney wins SVC freshman hoops title
YOUNGSTOWN Mooney defeated Ursuline 45-39 to win the championship of the fourth Rayen-SVC boys freshman basketball championship.
Don Dalesio and Joe Stoops scored 10 points each for Mooney.
Jamel Turner led Ursuline with 15 points.
Stoops was named tournament MVP. He was joined on the all-conference team by Trumaine Jenkins (Rayen), Domonique Murray (Warren Harding), Turner and Dalesio.
The tournament has had a different winner all four years. Warren Harding won in 2004, Ursuline in 2005 and Rayen in 2006.
Thiel's Brown eighth
at NCAA tournament
DUBUQUE, Iowa Thiel College senior Kyle Brown finished eight at 285 pounds at the NCAA Division III wrestling championships.
Brown, the seventh seed finished with a 2-3 record at the tournament. Saturday he was pinned by Andrew Neumann of Augsburg College in 3:27, then lost 3-2 to Wade Hammen of Buena Vista University.
Brown finished the season with a 41-10 record and concluded his career with a 128-34 mark.
