OXFORD Youngstown State made an early second-half run to get to within six points, but Miami (Ohio) pulled away methodically after that to defeat the Penguins, 69-51, in a women's non-conference basketball game Thursday night.
Youngstown State (1-5) has lost three straight, while the RedHawks (4-3) have won three in a row.
Heather Karner, who made all of the Penguins' 3-pointers (four) scored a team-high 15 points and had six rebounds. Ashley Pendleton added nine points and Nikita Lafleur grabbed 10 rebounds.
YSU shot just 28 percent from the floor (16-of-58) and made only 15-of-27 free throws (57 percent).
The RedHawks
Jenna Schone led Miami with 19 points, while Amanda Jackson added 17. Combined they were 14-of-28 from the floor; the rest of the RedHawks were 8-for-34.
The Penguins trailed 29-21 at halftime and 37-21 with 16 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the game, then went on a 10-0 run, capped by Velissa Vaughn's three-point play with 13:57 to go, to get to 37-31.
But, YSU made just three baskets oover the next seven minutes, and Karner's 3-pointer made it 49-40 Miami with 6:57 remaining.
The RedHawks then went on a 14-5 run all of YSU points came at the foul line for a 63-45 advantage with 2:19 to play.
Anjalia Lyons' layup with 47 seconds remaining accounted for the Penguins' last points, meaning Youngstown State made just four baskets over the final 14 minutes of the game.
The Penguins are off until Dec. 6, when they travel to Indiana State. Youngstown State returns home Dec. 16 against Akron in a 2 p.m. game at the Beeghly Center.
