SAIL Intervention strategies

Tuesday, July 4, 2006

A three-week program is set up at a Boardman elementary school for at-risk first- and second-graders to help them, among other things, prepare to pass state tests in reading, writing and math. Summer Adventures In Learning is broken into several components under reading and math:

READING

Decoding strategies, phonics and vocabulary.

Comprehension.

Book Buddies, a program that relies largely on volunteers and one-on-one tutoring.

Publishing, where youngsters read and discuss a story, then write and illustrate their own books based on a topic or theme determined by the instructor.

Creative expression with fine arts, which uses music as a tool for teaching math and reading.

Computer, Academy of Reading and an accelerated reading program.

MATH

Strategies for basic skills.

Time and money management.

Story problems

Computerized Math Facts in a Flash, where pupils apply their knowledge strategies to arrive at answers to math problems.

Book Buddies, same as above.

Writing activities with math.
